Back To Life, Back To Reality…Why Can’t Every Day Be a Vacation Day?

I just got back from a week in LA visiting a lot of friends from various times in my life as well as celebrating my nephew’s Bar Mitzvah and, suffice it to say, re-entry is definitely tough.

While I certainly can’t complain arriving home to 80 degree temperatures when the vast majority of the country is still dealing with crazy winter storms, sitting here at my computer in Tampa I can’t help but feel like the ridiculous number of emails, messages and reminders of things I MUST DO  is making me want to crawl back into my vacation hole and never return.

Call me crazy but, why can’t every day be like the previous 7 days of fun, frolicking and freedom?

I suppose if I won the lottery or found out some long lost relative left me a big inheritance I could be on permanent vacation mode but the odds are sufficiently stacked against me it seems.

So here I sit…the morning after… mapping out the rest of my day and it doesn’t look pretty.

No lemoncello iced tea at my old camp friend’s fabulous store…

only to be followed by a famous chopped salad lunch at La Scala in Beverly Hills.

(Sorry no salad photo…too busy talking…but it was really good…trust me)

No long conversation over a bottle of wine hanging out at my post college roommate’s Benedict Canyon home …

No 2 hour power walk along Manhattan Beach checking out the very cool architecture of the bazillion dollar beach homes

and lunch at Lemonade with a high school friend

(OMG!!!! I could eat there every day) …

Ok, so I am possibly the worst at taking selfies but these visual memories for me are priceless and in my mind, I will travel back to these moments whenever I want a mental break from the monotony of any day.

Is that enough of a daily “mini vacation”? Eh…probably not for most of us. Yet the demands of life in our society put the majority of us in a kind of full throttle mode during the work week. And as much as we read and hear the advice to take the time every day for some “vacation” moments like going to the gym, having coffee with a friend or maybe even just sitting still and breathing, for many, if it isn’t scheduled in our smart phones, it simply doesn’t happen.

Planning a few extra days like I did in LA to see as many people as I could took a lot of coordination. Trust me, I relied heavily on Tripit for keeping all of the details in one place and providing quick access to addresses to get me from point A to point Z and all of the points in between.

Planning a few extra moments every day to feel like you can be “away from it all” may not require a special travel app, but it still requires putting forth some degree of effort.  Hopefully, though, once you are in those moments, you savor them. And when you have to head back to life, back to reality again you are refreshed and ready to go.

That’s it for now…#BlackerOut

  1. I can completely relate. Re-entry from vacation can be overwhelming. I find realigning with my goals and making sure my calendar reflects what I am up to and then following that road map, makes a difference.

    • I actually try to make sure that my calendar has something fun on it for my return before I’ve even left Patti. Today that happens to include a wedding! Have a great day and enjoy your moments whatever they may be.

  3. Looks like you have a fabulous time and your advance planning paid off. Yeah, coming back from a vacation is always hectic but the memories of a great trip always help me work harder so the next trip might come sooner and be longer.

    • I’m already planning the next trip…NYC in May…can’t wait! I’m just glad that we have so many friends and relatives around the country that we can add on days to any life cycle celebrations so we can have some vacation time.

WOW! I’ve never heard of tripit. What a smart and useful app… I will DEFINITELY be using this for organizing future trips. I knew there would be something like this out there, but never thought to look. Thanks for sharing, I know as per your recommendation it must be great. Hope you enjoyed your trip and a little R&R! Dreaming of vacation 🙂

    • It is an awesome app Holly. I love it’s simplicity and the fact that it automatically knows that certain emails should get uploaded. I had to keep track of 3 different sets of airline reservations (me, my husband and my son) plus a car rental, two hotels, 3 different friends homes and a few different event venues. We are going to NYC for a wedding in May and between the airlines, hotel, restaurant reservations, theatre tickets and actual wedding details it will keep me very organized.

  5. It’s quite a transition when you arrive home from a fun vacation. Complete change of pace. I do love working in my business though and so I enjoy getting back to it.

  6. Looks like a great vacation! The better the ‘break’, the harder it is for me to get back into the swing of things…

    • I agree Nichole…and I am barely getting a chance to get back into the swing of things because I am leaving for Tallahassee tomorrow to attend my daughter’s film screening for her junior year project at the FSU Film School. I am excited to see her but can’t wait to get home on Saturday and decompress a little.

  9. Sounds like a great trip! Just got back from a week of museum hopping in Manhattan & “real life” is not nearly as aesthetically pleasing 🙂 But at least it is 80 instead of 8 degrees!

  12. I head to Santa Monica for a weekend wedding Memorial weekend. Am looking forward to seeing family and I think I’ll have down time. Most vacations have been cruises. I don’t take wi-fi and I slowly catch up when I get back home. You sound very experienced at keeping it all together and having a blast.

    • We seem to go in waves Indira. A lot of our travel depends on family and friends life cycle events so we can be away several weekends in a row and then go months with nothing. It’s crazy but I honestly don’t know any other way 🙂

Always difficult to come back to work after a great holiday. To quote my 8yr old nephew “why does this work stuff get in the way of fun?” Thanks for sharing.

As much as I love my job I also share that feeling when you get back to work after a break and realise you have to get back to earning that money you’ve been spending so hard. I’m glad you had a good vacation Beth.
